Turf Toe vs. Stubbed Toe
Turf toe usually occurs from repetitive force or a sudden hyperextension of the toe. The pain is located at the base of the big toe and will worsen with movement, particularly bending or pushing off the toe. Stiffness, swelling, and bruising may be present with turf toe as well.
A stubbed toe is from direct trauma, like hitting your toe against a hard object. The pain is located in the entire toe, including the tip and nail. You'd feel an immediate sharp pain at the time of injury. Bruising or discoloration around the nail or skin, and possible throbbing sensation as the toe heels.
When to See a Doctor
You should consult a podiatrist if:
- The pain persists and worsens after a few days.
- There is swelling, bruising, or stiffness in the big toe joint.
- You suspect a fracture or discoloration.
