Athlete's foot, also known as tinea pedis, is a common fungal infection that affects the skin on the feet, especially between the toes. The fungus thrives in warm, moist environments like gyms, or locker rooms. Athlete's foot can affect anyone, despite the name.
Common Causes of Athlete's Foot
- Warm, moist environments: Walking barefoot in gyms, locker rooms, and public pools
- Skin cracks or wounds: Fungus can enter the skin through cracks and wounds
- Contact with an infected person or contaminated surface: Athlete's foot is contagious and through direct contact can grow
