What is Sesamoiditis (ball of foot pain)?
Sesamoiditis is inflammation of the sesamoid bones and the surrounding tendons in the forefoot. These sesamoids are actually not connected to other bones in the joints but are embedded in the tendons. They are small pea-shaped bones that play are crucial role in absorbing impact and aiding movement. When the tendons surrounding these bones become inflamed or irritated, it can result in ball of foot pain, sesamoiditis.
Causes of Sesamoiditis
- Athletes and dancers: Common in runners, basketball, baseball, football players, and ballet dancers
- High-heel wearers: Forwards pressure can irritate the bones
- High arches: Foot structure can increase pressure on the sesamoid bones
- Bunions: People with bunions may also have sesamoiditis
